TAOYUAN, TAIWAN (TraNews) – The Ripped Sky Festival is one of the most important holidays in Hakka communities. The Ripped Sky Festival traditionally falls on the twentieth of the first month in the lunar calendar. On this day, Hakka villages would host a grand celebration by singing traditional folk songs and preparing Hakka delicacies.

In reviving Hakka culture, the Council for Hakka Affairs of the Executive Yuan sought advice from the public and has subsequently selected the Ripped Sky Festival as the National Hakka Day in hopes of embodying unique Hakka cultural traits. The festival is set to commemorate the contribution of the Hakka people to a multicultural Taiwanese society and culture. Starting in 2011, the Council for Hakka Affairs of the Executive Yuan will join hands with individual Hakka groups in every city and county to host celebratory activities for the National Hakka Day.

Taoyuan County is the county with the most Hakka population in northern Taiwan. The present Hakka population in Taoyuan County reaches nearly 0.8 million. To tie in with the very first National Hakka Day, the Taoyuan County Government Cultural Affairs Bureau has joined hands with the Taoyuan County Government Hakka Affairs Bureau to host the Taoyuan Musical & Art Festival at Taoyuan Arena on the 22th of February in celebrating the National Hakka Day.
