TAICHUNG, TAIWAN (TraNews) – Located in southern part of Stanley on Hong Kong Island, Stanley used to be Hong Kong’s political and military centre; hence, Stanley boasts many colonial buildings and historic landmarks. In this small town, there is one place that recorded the traces of war and history.
Stanley Military Cemetery is located on Wong Ma Kok Road near St. Stephen Bay in Stanley. It is the only military cemetery of the early colonial era used for burials of the members of the garrisons and their families in the 1840’s. Due to various factors, the cemetery was once closed for over seventy years until the Second World War.
Visitors to the military cemetery can see rows of tombstones lined on the grassland. There are hundreds of WWII burials in the cemetery. Looking at the present-day Hong Kong, it is hard for people to imagine the cruelty of war.
